Vestibular dysfunction
The vestibular system is responsible for maintaining balance, spatial orientation, and coordinating movement. When this system is impaired due to a traumatic incident (falls, hit to the head etc), viral infections, or no cause at all, one can experience all or some of the following symptoms:
- Dizziness/vertigo
- Balance problems
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blurred vision
- Feeling disorientated
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo
- Most common diagnosis for vertigo when tiny calcium carbonate crystals become dislodged from their normal location move into one of the semicircular canals in the ear (responsible for detecting rotational movements)
- Treatment involves a series of maneuvers performed by a trained vestibular therapist to help move the crystals back to its proper location
Cervicogenic dizziness
Dizziness that is caused by tightness in the neck due to a traumatic incident (falls, hit to the head), jaw tightness, and poor posture.
